Robert Mark Alter was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He got his bachelors degree from Cornell University, and his masters degree from Brandeis University. He has been practicing psychotherapy for individuals and couples since 1976.

He is the author of three other books:

He was a contributing editor to the magazine Mothering, writing a column called ‘A Father,” from 1979-1982.  He has also published poems, essays, and short fiction in other magazines, and has taught writing and literature at both the high school and college level.

He was on the staff of the nationally known Opening the Heart workshops (1977-1985), and was associate clinical director for two years with his wife Jane.  He has been practicing Siddha Yoga meditation since 1981.  His favorite book is Walden by Henry David Thoreau, and he owns every album, tape, and CD that Bob Dylan ever recorded.  He follows all the Boston sports teams, and is still hoping for season tickets along the third base line in Fenway Park.  Jane and Robert have been married since 1972,and they are proud parents and grandparents.


Jane Alter was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Queens.  She got her bachelors degree from Cornell University, and her masters degree from Salem State School of Social Work.  She is a couples therapist, a Siddha Yoga meditation teacher and hatha yoga stretch instructor, and a former Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
